OPEN YOUR CLUB MEETINGS FOR GREATER
SUCCESS
I
can remember back to the days as a booster club president
and the day or two before the regular monthly booster club
meeting. I always grew anxious in anticipation of the number
of parents and members who would attend our meetings.
Over
the months neighboring schools and clubs heard that our meetings
were attracting the attention of overly large numbers of people.
Eventually the calls started coming in and the questions were
always the same "how are you getting so many people to
come to your meetings?"
If your
booster club is seeking to expand your parent participation
and the attendance at your regular club meetings then here
are a few simple steps you should consider.
1. Open
your meetings to members and non-members. This should include
past alumni, local business supporters (sponsors), parents
and supporters (even those who do not have a child involved
in your progam) and school administrators.
2. Start
an annual tradition of sending a personal invitation to the
parents of incoming (freshman, 1st year players, new band
members).
3. Make
your meetings open and welcoming. This may seem like an impossible
task but the little things will really help new attendees
to feel welcome like - refreshments, a pre-meeting greeting
committee, asking for input from attendees.
4. Have
meeting agendas. It's important to have a well planned meeting
and to stay on task. Don't allow your meetings to drag on
and become general gab sessions.
Take
your meeting to the next level and make it the envy of all
other clubs in your area.
Happy
Boostering!

Dear Booster,
What can a Parent Organization/Booster Club accomplish that
cannot be achieved through the use of a Student Activity Fund?
George
A.
Red Raiders
Booster Club
Dear
George,
Thanks for the question. A Student Activity
Fund or ASB fund is ideally suited for student governed organizations
where the kids run the program and have a parent or faculty
administrator who serves to oversee the organization. They
are very restrictive and controled by decisions in many cases
by individuals who have no involvement or interest in your
group. Budgets and the ability to financially support your
group are not based on your groups fundraising abilities,
but on the overall financial health of the ASB or ASA fund
itself. With all this said the real benefit and value of a
booster club versus an ASA or ASB is that it has the ability
to grow, expand and support the program as it sees fit. Your
booster clubs board and officers control what you do, how
you choose to grow and can provide a great deal of support
without the governance of a third party.
Send
us your Dear Booster.... article and we will select one each
month to share with the readers of Booster Trends. To submit
your email send to: dearbooster@boostercentral.org.

TIPS |
|
 |
|
How to have a successful booster
meeting:
One way to insure your booster club will have successful meetings
would be to include a guest speaker and keeping your meeting
to no more than an hour. That will also insure that they will
return to the next meeting.
Booster Basic:
Another way to help your booster club become successful would
be to always open your booster club meetings to the public.

Movie Night
Many organizations rent a movie and hold movie night fundraising
events. This works especially well if you have a large room
and projection/large screen TV. Make money by charging a
single price for the movie and refreshments; provide the
movie free but sell refreshments; or charge nothing and
just ask for donations. Make sure you select a movie that
will be of special interest to your group. Allow plenty
of time for socialization before and after the movie. Some
groups have held all-nighters where movie-goers bring their
sleeping bags and blankets and have a movie marathon.
The Faribault Lions Club was able to obtain the movie Grumpy
Old Men from Warner Brothers to show as a premier before
it opened at the movie theaters. They sold 220 tickets at
$25 each, and held a fundraising party before the movie.
Hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer were included, along with
viewing the movie. The screen writer, Mark Steven Johnson,
was there to visit with people, and they auctioned off a
script that was signed by all of the stars! It was a huge
success! The tickets were sold before they were printed.
Part of the movie was filmed in Faribault, so it had a special
appeal to the local public, as well as being a Minnesota
movie.

FACT |

Booster Factoid of the month-
Through participation in activity programs, students learn
self-discipline, build self-confidence and develop skills
to handle competitive situations. These are qualities the
public expects schools to produce in students so that they
become responsible adults and productive citizens.
Quote
of the month-
“The power of one is above all things the power to
believe in yourself. Often well beyond any latent ability
previously demonstrated. The mind is the athlete, The body
is simply the means it uses.”
