How to turn 2003 into a banner year

EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS COLUMN

Insuring the continuation of booster clubs and the extra-curricular activities they support.

I was blessed with the opportunity to stumble my way into the position of Booster Club President for a 4A high school. For those of you who have also shared this position you can appreciate the fact that at best we had little more than what had been passed on from year to year as a path to follow. At that time I knew little of the real need for the booster club and I knew even less of what a positive impact they could play on the continuation of extra-curricular activities.

Today nearly 5 years later I have come to understand how important it is that a booster club becomes a working partner with school administration, coaches and parents. Booster clubs have the real opportunity to help make a difference in insuring the continuation of extra curricular activities. Our school districts are facing challenging financial times. Less funding to cover transportation, new uniforms, extra coaches, new equipment and improvement to facilities. Money that would not be obtainable without the support of a good booster club, which in many cases would mean the reduction or complete elimination of programs.

Although we traditionally only stay active and support our booster clubs while are kids are still attending school I would like to encourage you to continue to offer your support, guidance and expertise to your booster club for years after you have departed. Your involvement however limited is of real value.

I hope you and your families have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. During this time of giving I encourage you to share the joy of the holidays with someone less fortunate.

I welcome your emails and look forward to assisting you in success.

BOOSTER CLUB SWEEPSTAKES

The NBCA is proud to announce the launching of a nationwide sweepstakes fundraising program in working partnership with College Bound Sports, located in Goldens Bridge, New York.

Booster clubs can now promote a sweepstakes fundraising program that provides ticket holders with enrollment in 52 weekly drawings all with the purchase of just 1 - $10 ticket. No risk or up front investment by booster clubs, just the opportunity to generate much needed funds. If your club would like to learn more send us your fundraising chairman's email and name.

VENDOR SHOWCASE

We are delighted to announce a new BoosterWorld section - Vendor Showcase (coming mid Dec.). Vendors placed in this section include those offering products and services that are non fundraising related. This area will have a similar look and feel to Fundraising Corner, however the items will be completely different. Two of the first company's to take advantage of this new section are Light Tags and Fieldhouse. In the coming months you will find a growing list of vendors offering items such as: sporting equipment for all high school or junior high teams, uniforms and various other attire, concession equipment and supplies, listings of camps, clinics and training aides. Vendor Showcase will also provide opportunities to shop for discounted and discontinued items.

As well as a section where company's can promote unique marketing concepts designed to help your club save more and earn more. One of the first participants in this section is AE Fundraising. Be sure to check this company out. They have a very unique and different way of showcasing your fundraising programs.

VENDOR OF THE MONTH

Our Vendor of the Month for December is Team Dynamics. The product that this company offers is a temporary tattoo designed in your teams color to show your team spirit. These are sold for $1.00 a piece from a sheet of tattoos. Team Dynamics has a wide variety of various mascots and spirit slogans that can be designed in the colors of your team. Shannon Waller of Team Dynamics states “…these tattoos are easy to sell, come in many colors and are easily applied and easily taken off.” Team Dynamics also has jewelry, key chains shaped like your mascot, glitter gel and face paint. You can find them in our Fundraising Corner where you can see a sample image of their tattoo. We are pleased to have them aboard and look forward to working with them. Check them out.

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH

Our Spotlight vendor of the month is Fieldhouse. Fieldhouse is a leading provider of fundraising products including custom designed posters and apparel that promote and raise funds for schools, youth sports leagues, and booster clubs. Fieldhouse will also be a new vendor that can be found in our Vendor Showcase. This company has unique and interesting items for fundraising that have worked well all over the country. We encourage you to check them out and see what you think.

NEW VENDORS

Other new vendors joining us this month include LIGHT TAG. This company will also be seen in our Vendor Showcase. Light Tag is a computerized wearable sign that displays a digital programmed script, just like a mini reader board. It is run on batteries and looks like a lot of fun.

We also welcome aboard ABC Fundraising who specializes in fundraising scratchcards and fundraising discount cards. Russell Plenkers Photography specializing in calendar sales.

In addition, we welcome Volunteer Appreciation on board. They offer a CD spotlighting the Winter Olympics called “Bringing Home the Gold.” The money raised goes to helping bring the Winter Olympics to Reno, Nevada in 2014. This CD is only available through the winter so jump on the bandwagon to support our Olympic team and in having the Olympics in Reno in 2014. Your club will raise money in the process, the Olympic committee will make money and we will get the Olympics back in the US. What more could you ask for.

Another new vendor this month is AE Fundraising. Annie Essing of AE Fundraising commented, “…we want to make the Booster Club patrons aware that they can donate to their clubs on a yearly basis without waiting for someone to come around selling something.” AE Fundraising is an online shopping mart. After you finish shopping, you put in what Booster Club you are supporting and they get 20% of your shopping dollars. What a great idea. You can find AE Fundraising in our Vendor Showcase.

You can check out these and other vendors on BoosterWorld or send me an email if you have any questions: jevans@boosterclubs.org.

DEAR BOOSTER .....

Dear Booster,
I just joined our booster club and we need some help finding creative sources for raising funds to cover the expenses no longer provided by our school district. How can your organization help us? Mary H., Boston, MA

Dear Mary,
Like virtually all booster clubs fundraising is key #1 to insuring success. The NBCA has developed a fundraising department that works solely on seeking out the best fundraising solutions available. We then conduct our due diligence to insure that the company's and program's provide a high quality program with better than average results.

We not only provide the conduit to fundraising programs we also provide online resources, questions & answers as well as guidance and support. I would like to encourage you to visit the following link where you can fill out a short fundraising questionnaire that will help our fundraising staff best guide your club to success. One of our staff members will follow up and help your club raise the money it is seeking.

Send us your Dear Booster.... article and we will select one each month to share with the readers of Booster Trends. To submit your question email dearbooster@boosterclubs.org.

FAST FACT

Fact of the month-
People tend to volunteer for more than they can handle. Always break large jobs into smaller, workable tasks and only assign one at a time. Giving a person less many times produces more.

Quote of the month-
"Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I may remember. But involve me, and I'll understand. "
