Conduct

Welcome outsiders to attend.
Develop
an event that can be conducted every year
without extensive effort and that will start
the year off, welcome new parents as well
as showcase and promote your program.
Become
a visible and ongoing support for your school

school activities regardless of whether
they directly help your club or not.
Support
other groups, clubs and organizations both
in your school and your community.

CHOOSING A YOUTH SPORTS TRAINING PROGRAM |
Choosing
A Youth Sports Training Program
Josh Henkin, CSCS Unlike
any other time in history, athletes
of all ages are participating
in a greater degree of training
Programs to prepare them for
their upcoming seasons. Youth
athletics have seen an explosion
of professional training services
that offer sports enhancement,
injury prevention, and SAQ (speed,
agility, and quickness) camps.
These services are designed
to help athletes have a better
opportunity to receive college
scholarships; increase the chance
for a team to have a winning
season; and most importantly,
decrease the chances of experiencing
injuries.
With
the multitude of training program
choices for athletes and their
parents, the question arises,
“How do I know what is
best for me or my son or daughter?”
The answer lies in becoming
an educated consumer and making
sure to look for specific details
about the program and its coaches.
By following the outlined information,
you can create a very positive
and rewarding experience for
your young athlete.
Education
Just as with any other profession,
you want to have confidence
that the individual your son
or daughter works with is well
educated in the field of sports
performance. Don’t be
timid about asking for the instructors’
educational background. A degree
in either Exercise Science,
Exercise Physiology or Kinesiology
are all good signs that this
coach has a solid background
in the basics of exercise.
However,
finding out if this individual
has continued their education
to keep up to date on the latest
in the sports performance field
is of utmost importance. Most
professional coaches will posses
a certification from the National
Strength & Conditioning
Association becoming recognized
as a Certified Strength &
Conditioning Specialist. This
is one of the best-recognized
national certifications because
it requires the individual to
have a degree and the certification
testing is directly related
to sports performance.
In
the end, finding a coach that
seems to take their education
seriously should instill confidence
that you are on the right track.
Organization
A good sign for anyone searching
for a quality program should
look to see the level of organization
of the coaches. Does each athlete
go through a battery of tests
that relate to specific improvements
in their sport? Is there an
interview to identify the strengths
and weaknesses of the athlete
during their sport? Do the coaches
keep records of the daily training
program or does all the work
seem random? Does the staff
look prepared to work with the
number of athletes participating,
or does chaos look to have taken
over the training session? Does
the staff discuss nutrition
and lifestyle techniques to
enhance performance?
At
the end of each training cycle
there should be a formal meeting
with the athlete, parent, and
coach. This meeting is to discuss
how the prior training cycle
progressed and how the athlete
changed during the time period.
Such a meeting should also focus
on how the athlete feels about
what was done to help him or
her reach their potential as
a player. This is a must before
continuing on to more advanced
training programs.
Results
Nothing speaks more about a
specific program than the results
that are obtained. Be sure to
ask for testimonials from other
clients, both athletes and parents.
Do not hesitate to ask to speak
with their clients in person
to gain a better understanding
of how both the parent and young
athlete feel about the service.
Did the program deliver what
was promised? Most athletes
go to these training programs
to become better at their sport.
Were the results achieved representative
to becoming a better athlete?
The coach should articulate
to the both parent and athlete
what and why each result is
relevant.
Many
of these sports training programs
are a wonderful opportunity
for young athletes to not only
prepare for the physical demands
of their sport, but the psychological
demands as well. Watching a
group of young athletes develop
a solid work ethic, team unity,
and leadership can be some of
the most rewarding qualities
one can hope to achieve from
these programs. In the end,
the most important result is
that your son or daughter feels
better about playing their sport
and has had a positive experience
with training and exercise.

FUNDRAISING TIPS OF THE MONTH |
|
Presented
by Justfundraising.com
How
To Pick the Right Fundraiser Product
- 6 Key Questions
Usually the first question that you
ask yourself when you realize your
group needs to raise funds is What
Are We Going To Sell? There are thousands
of products available for fundraising
programs that range from candy to
nuts, cookies to wrapping paper, and
inspirational goods to sausage and
cheese. After all, anything people
can use in some form or another can
be re-sold to them by groups for a
profit.
Consider the following 6 questions
to help you choose the ideal fundraising
product or program for your group:
1. How much money do we need to raise?
Come up with a goal that is based
on your group's needs not just one
that sounds good. If your group needs
to raise a few hundred dollars, lollipops
or a small order of candy bars may
be appropriate. If you need to raise
over $5,000, you may want to use an
order taker fundraiser like a popular
chocolate brochure program or a cookie
dough fundraiser.
2. What would our group enjoy selling?
Your group members will determine
the success of your fundraiser. Ask
them what they would like to sell
and what they'd absolutely not like
to sell. The more they like the products,
the more confident and motivated they
will be to sell them.
3. What has been successful in the
past?
'If it ain't broke don't fix it' As
the saying goes, if you've been having
a huge success with a certain program
year after year- stick to it. Chances
are, your supporters are expecting
you at that same time every year and
your participants are comfortable
with selling the product.
4. How soon do we need the money?
Pre-sale programs ( order taker )
do take longer than direct sale programs
(candy bars, lollipops etc.). If you
need to raise funds within 1.5-2 quick
weeks, we suggest you fundraise using
direct-sale products. If you have
4 weeks or more to wrap up your fundraiser,
a pre-sale (order taker) brochure
may be ideal.
5.
Are the Products we're Selling of
High Quality?
A consumer will be happy to support
a worthy cause, however they won't
be very interested in paying for inferior
or significantly overpriced products.
Remember that your fundraiser may
be an annual or semi-annual event,
and nothing builds profits like a
reputation for offering top quality
products.
6. Does the Price Match the Income
Level of the Community?
As well, make sure that the retail
price of the products offered are
priced fairly. Offering a fairly priced
good at a price that's affordable
to help a good cause will lead to
quick success!

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH |
| Our
Spotlight of the Month is THE
ONE MINUTE SHOPPER (TOMS).
THE
ONE MINUTE SHOPPER (TOMS)–
What a very clever idea. TOMS has
a great variety of products from complete
dinners to single servings of meat
that can be shipped to you in dry
to keep it frozen. It arrives in a
box within a box and is neatly packaged
so that you can have one or four of
an item. These individual packages
are of the best quality meats, poultry
and seafood. The convenience alone
will sell this product. Once someone
has bought it, they will buy over
and over again and you will receive
your fundraising money from their
repeat business too. What a good idea!
You
can check out these and other vendors
on BoosterWorld
or send me an email if you have any
questions: jevans@boosterclubs.org.

| DEAR
BOOSTER ..... |
Dear
Booster,
Hi,
we are in the process of forming a new music
booster club and have searched high and
low for software that will help us to conduct
our club activities. We found that the NBCA
offers a software program and would like
to purchase the club software. Can you please
give us the price for the software. Thanks,
Jean F.
Dear Jean,
You are right in that
there is not a software program on the market
that provides booster clubs with the multiple
tasking functions necessary to efficiently
run a booster club. The software you are
referring to that the NBCA provides is a
program that we make available to every
member - free of charge. Through Command
Central, which is found on the BoosterWorld
website each club member
has full access to setup and control ongoing
tasks via the secure server. Included are
a multitude of club tasking modules including
- database management, club documents, club
notes, emails, newsletters, websites, vital
club statistics, fundraising management
and interactive communication boards. I
suggest that instead of spending thousands
of dollars on contracting with a development
company to modify a program you consider
becoming a member of the NBCA. Benefits
include the program you are seeking as well
as a portfolio of support services and benefits
all year long.
Send
us your Dear Booster.... article and we
will select one each month to share with
the readers of Booster Trends. To submit
your email send to: dearbooster@boosterclubs.org.

FACT |
| Fact
of the month-
The average booster club volunteer is active
for 1.5 years. If you want your booster
club to flow smoothly year after year, develop
a shadowing program where incoming volunteers
support the work of outgoing volunteers
their first year. Develop a learn then lead
program and your booster club will eliminate
the roller coaster effects of continued
success.
