Club
Fact |
| Non-profit
vs. Tax Exempt
Many
booster clubs confuse registering with your
state corporation commission as a non-profit
corporation with it being the same as a
federally recognized tax exempt organization.
Less
than 5% of booster clubs are tax exempt
organizations in large part due to the extensive
paperwork, $500 filing fee and the average
6 months to receive the acceptance letter.
The
benefits of becoming a recognized tax exempt
organization are many and well worth your
club either pursuing the tax exempt process.
If you find the process, time and expense
to overwhelming the alternative solution
that provides equal benefit is to consider
becoming a public operating foundation.

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS COLUMN |
REMEMBER
THE TITANS!
A
couple of weeks back I had the chance to
watch the movie "Remember the Titans",
again for the 3rd time. While watching the
movie I found myself reflecting on a conversation
I had earlier in the day with a school superintendent.
He was very concerned about the financial
troubles his district was facing and shared
that he felt that unless he could gain a
majority support from the community that
they would face severe cutbacks and even
elimination of many of the programs in both
their 8 middle and 2 high schools.
This
gentleman was passionate about kids and
felt that taking away the sports and music
programs would have a major impact on his
community. As I continued to watch the movie
I reflected on some of the comments that
the superintendent had made and found that
his plight, although initially one that
seemed to only effect his small community
did in fact have the potential to cause
a ripple effect that would be felt by communities
many miles away.
Like
the Titans who blazed the trail for many
to follow, we too should feel empowered
to stand up and become actively involved
in helping to insure that all kids - regardless
of their financial stature, location or
skill level get the chance to experience
the life building skills associated with
extra-curricular programs such as sports,
band, cheerleading and drama.
If
you feel that your town, school district
or program is immune from the challenges
currently being faced by thousands of programs
around the country, then kindly think again!
Unfortunately, we receive dozens of calls
and countless emails every single week from
all parts of the country, calls that come
from some of the richest counties to the
poorest counties, and all facing the same
troubling challenges.
Remember
the Titans is a moving story that shows
how a group of young men, lead by a passionate
coach can overcome even the largest obstacles.
Working together we too have the ability
to overcome the obstacles facing the continuation
of extra-curricular programs for our kids,
but it requires us each to make the commitment
of joining together where our voices and
our actions can become strong enough to
overcome the obstacles.
Each
morning we are given the same 86,400 seconds
to use as we see fit. This credit called
Time cannot be taken back, it cannot be
saved for tomorrow and it cannot be given
to others. At the end of the day we have
each had the same amount of time to accomplish
our tasks, dreams and to help make a difference.
I
challenge each of you to use just a fraction
of your time each day to help bring awareness
and support of the worth and value that
extra-curricular programs provide to your
community. One by one - inch by inch we
can make a difference!
I
wish each of you the best of success.
Happy Boostering!

SEATING - GREAT FUNDRAISER! |
PREFERRED SEATING— GREAT FUNDRAISER!
BLEACHER
MOUNT
PERMANENT
OR PORTABLE
At
last an answer for a removable stadium seat.
The Champion portable slides on from the
front. Seat back interlocks with seat bucket.
No break plastic flexes and cradles your
body to make sitting extraordinarily comfortable.
The seat envelope (13”) meets the
back to back bleacher spacing requirements.
The bleacher mount hinges are made of a
super tough resin fiberglass filled plastic
that replaces steel and is corrosion and
chemical resistant. Power washing with harsh
cleaners will not hurt the plastic. This
plastic is of automotive grade durable strength,
high density and high impact. The standards
are 2 ½ inches wide.
The
seat and back are solid injection molded
no break polypropylene. This plastic is
stronger than hollow blow molded polyethylene
plastic used by other stadium seat manufacturers.
Take a hammer and hit it hard: It won’t
break!
The Champion Seat bleacher mounts permanently
onto preexisting bleachers. It can also
be mounted on top of cement risers.
The seat contains an automatic 3/4 fold
lift up system guided by 2 springs. The
spring system is totally enclosed. The carriage
is a lift system in which the seat rotates
up on a stainless steel rod. Alignment is
kept with a guided track. Hinges have a
self lubricated plastic which increases
the life of the hinge and eliminates the
need for external lubrication. Hardware
is automotive grade cadmium plated or stainless
steel fasteners. The advantage of all plastic
versus steel or cast iron is that there
is no rust or chipping of paint.

Portable folds down for easy storage and
portability. Just slide seat off of bleacher
plank.

| BUILDING
A SUCCESSFUL BOOSTER CLUB |
This month we cover topics #9 and
#10
Behind
every successfully funded athletic
program, there is usually an active
and thriving booster club helping
to pave the way. Without a properly
running support branch, athletic departments
and alumni would be forced to constantly
operate and support under a dark cloud
of uncertainty, debt and cutbacks.
Booster
clubs are an essential part of not
only the fundraising process, but
also the community process. The effectiveness
and efficiency of an enthusiastic
booster club can provide an excellent
vehicle for community involvement
and a perfect way to offset the rising
costs afflicting athletic departments
across the country.
However,
having an effective booster club is
much more than monthly meetings and
money drives. It is about teamwork,
responsibility, accountability and
awareness.
Here
are 15 of the most common mistakes
(listed randomly) made by booster
clubs across the nation. Each month
we will provide expanded topic and
tips for two (2) of the topics noted.

Overstepping
boundaries...
Booster
clubs are passionate supporters
of the activity they endorse which
means they can sometimes overstep
their positions. Conducting meetings
with school administrators and
coaches to help gain a clear understanding
as to what is and is not acceptable
will help to reduce and prevent
unneeded conflict and challenges
between the booster club, the
schools administrators and coaches.
Tip:
Start the season or the school
year with a three step planning
process. Step 1: meet with your
club officers and outline the
plan of action for the coming
year. Step 2: meet with your
coach and his staff to determine
their special needs and areas
of concern. Share your clubs
plans and goals and then match
them to be supportive of the
coach and the staff. Step 3:
meet with your schools administration
and gain their support of your
plans as well as positioning
your group to become an active
part of the events during the
school year. Establishing clear
objectives with all parties
will help dramatically reduce
challenges.
|
10 |
Understanding
the booster clubs job...
Establishing
a clear and detailed outline of
what the booster club does will
help to minimize any potential
conflicts with ASB, DECA and the
other organizations at the school.
Tip:
A simple rule of thumb for club
activities is to remember that
we are all here to support the
kids. Daytime, at school activities
that provide kids with the opportunity
to expand and enhance their
learning skills should be left
to the ASB and DECA groups.
After school events such as
football concessions and raffles
are better suited for booster
clubs and their supporters.
|
11 |
Keeping
the club compliant with state
and federal guidelines... |
12 |
Staying
in-tune with district policies... |
13 |
Establishing
a working relationship with school
administrators and coaches... |
14 |
Lack
of policies and procedures... |
15 |
Outlining
job descriptions and areas of
responsibility... |

| VENDOR
OF THE MONTH |
Our
Vendor of the Month is HALE
INDIAN RIVER GROVES
Steve
Hale, Jr., spent his spring break of 1939
in Vero Beach, Fl. He met an elderly man
who was very sickly, who showed him his
small fruit packaging company. After Mr.
Hale tasted the fruit, he realized the man’s
fruit was the best he’d ever tasted.
This
visit inspired him to do this also. He felt
is an elderly man who was sick could do
it, he could really do it well. The only
thing stopping him was a war.
After
WWII, he and his wife immediately headed
for Vero Beach and stated to work. The first
fruit stand was rented, but that didn’t
last long. Soon the word was out that Hale
Grove Fruit was the best around.
Now
you can order Hale River Grove fruit from
practically anywhere. It is still a family
business and keeps growing all the time.
Their website is www.halegrove.com.

YOURSELF FUNDRAISER OF THE MONTH |
TEACHER TORTURE
School principal picks as many teachers
as he/she feels will willingly participate
- no party poopers! The principal also has
to play (to be fair of course). The principal
then selects an "appropriate"
activity that each teacher has to do such
as: kiss a pig, color hair a wild color,
dress outrageously, roller skate, etc. Be
creative! Have fun! The teachers vote on
what the principal has to do. Get a large
jar for each teacher and the principal.
Write the name of the each teacher and the
principal and their "assigned activity"
on their individual jars. Put the jars where
someone can keep an eye over them - preferably
in a high traffic area. Students, teachers,
parents, and other school employees "vote"
by depositing money into the jar(s). At
the end of the fundraiser, the three (five,
etc) teachers who have the most money in
their jars, have to do their assigned activity.
Have the "winners" perform their
activity at a pep rally or other regular
assembly, or hold a special assembly just
for the fundraiser.

DEAR BOOSTER ..... |
|
Dear
Booster,
I was recently
voted in as the booster club president
but I have no idea what to do - help!
Can you tell me how to get started?
I tried to get help from the PTA but
was told that they do not support
booster clubs.
Janice
P.
Mesa,
AZ
Dear
Janice,
Congratulations on becoming the president
for your booster club. I hope that
by the time your term ends you will
have helped to establish a procedure
for transitioning the outgoing officers
with the incoming ones so that all
will benefit from the experience and
knowledge obtained while in office.
The
NBCA is excited to assist you and
your group and welcomes the opportunity
to help you make a positive impact
that will provide support to your
program. Without knowing whether your
booster club is a start-up or has
been in operation for years we can't
give you a complete road map as to
how or what needs to be done next.
So the first step is to gather more
information from you so that we can
properly guide you in the right direction.
Like all booster clubs there are some
basic steps that need to be taken
to insure success. If you are also
tied to a school then you will have
other considerations that must be
realized.
The
first step I would like for you to
take is to fill out our online booster
club questionnaire. This will help
our staff to better understand the
current position of your club as well
as helping to determine exactly what
your organization needs to do. Please
visit the following link where you
can either fill the questionnaire
out online or you can print it off
and mail back to the association.
As soon as it is received it will
be assigned to a qualified staff member
who will see that you receive a comprehensive
report including step by step procedures
for getting started. Here's the link:
Send
us your Dear Booster.... article and
we will select one each month to share
with the readers of Booster Trends.
To submit your email send to: dearbooster@boosterclubs.org.
