THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS COLUMN |

WHAT GOOD IS A BOOSTER CLUB?
What
good is a booster club? Take a stroll through
a line of parents waiting to watch the local
ballgame and ask them this same question.
You are sure to get a mixed response. The
real fact is that the majority of parents
don't really know what a booster club is.
In fact, many just see it as "the group
of football parents" or the "cheerleading
parents". While only a small majority recognize
that the booster club is actually a very
important group of people
(parents, alumni, community supporters,
etc.) who tirelessly support the continuation
of extra-curricular programs through a focused
level of active support.
A
good booster club
is one of the most valuable assets a school
or program can have. Think for a moment
on the benefits associated with a program
having a good
booster club.
A
good booster club
plays a key role in providing volunteer
support, transportation, field preparations
and upkeep, facility improvements, acquiring
new equipment, supplies and helping to cover
costs associated with summer camps, clinics,
lodging, meals, uniforms and coaches salaries.
A good booster
club provides scholarships, financial assistance,
and an unlimited amount of volunteer support.
Now
take away the good
booster club, its volunteer and financial
support and what are you faced with? I will
challenge anyone who believes that a program
can successfully succeed year after year
without a good
booster club. The fact is if your booster
clubs isn't providing the support your extra-curricular
program needs then it's time for change.
A good booster
club is an invaluable asset.
As
we start back into the school year I want
to encourage each of you to help your booster
club become the valuable asset that will
insure the success of your program. Take
the time to introduce the value of your
booster club to parents and community supporters
and remember that each person you educate
on the value of a good
booster club is a newfound resource that
may very well enhance your clubs potential.
I
wish each of you the best of success.
Happy Boostering!

CLUB MEMBERSHIPS |

With
each passing year the NBCA has seen an outstanding
expansion take place across the nation.
Our goal of helping insure that all booster
clubs succeed is stronger today than it
ever has been. With the downturn in state
and federal funding supporting extra-curricular
programs booster clubs are fast becoming
the support channel for insuring continued
success.
The
National Booster Club Association understands
the challenges and needs faced by booster
clubs and in an effort to insure that all
boosters have the best possible opportunity
to succeed we are now making available to
all booster clubs the opportunity to take
advantage of the benefits associated with
membership in the National Booster Club
Association. In an effort to see that every
booster club in the country receives the
support and resources necessary to succeed
we have now opened membership and its benefits
to clubs for all clubs.
Membership
will entitle the booster club to the basic
member benefits needed to help manage and
grow your club.
If
your booster club has not enrolled with
the NBCA now is the time to take advantage
of a tremendous opportunity.

A SUCCESSFUL BOOSTER CLUB |
|
This month we cover topics #14 & #15
Behind
every successfully funded athletic
program, there is usually an active
and thriving booster club helping
to pave the way. Without a properly
running support branch, athletic departments
and alumni would be forced to constantly
operate and support under a dark cloud
of uncertainty, debt and cutbacks.
Booster
clubs are an essential part of not
only the fundraising process, but
also the community process. The effectiveness
and efficiency of an enthusiastic
booster club can provide an excellent
vehicle for community involvement
and a perfect way to offset the rising
costs afflicting athletic departments
across the country.
However,
having an effective booster club is
much more than monthly meetings and
money drives. It is about teamwork,
responsibility, accountability and
awareness.
Here
are 15 of the most common mistakes
(listed randomly) made by booster
clubs across the nation. Each month
we will provide expanded topic and
tips for two (2) of the topics noted.

(Covered

|
14 |
Lack
of policies and procedures...
Understanding
how to handle a given issue as
well as the standard operating
procedure for a given task is
an area that most booster clubs
neglect, which is the cause a
great deal of confusion.
Tip: How you
handle major issues should be
outlined in your by-laws. Minor
issues should be discussed regularly
between club officers and a format
for reaching a clear understanding
must be achieved and then recorded
for future reference. |
15 |
Outlining
job descriptions and areas of
responsibility...
Booster
clubs must have a clear understanding
of the responsibilities and job
descriptions for each position
including sub-committee or co
chair positions. A clear definition
will increase the likelihood of
a new volunteer stepping into
the position come elections as
well as helping to better organize
the group throughout the year.
Tip: Put duties
and responsibilities of each club
position on the back of nomination
forms as well as publishing for
distribution at your first meeting
of the start of each school year
or season. |

| DEAR
BOOSTER |
|
Dear
Booster,
We are thinking
of starting a Booster Club at our
Elementary school to separate the
sports program from PTA programs.
One question I have is regarding bank
accounts. Would the Booster Club be
able to set up a local bank account
in order to deposit checks from fundraising
and write checks for tournament fees
or must all checks be sent to you
instead? Are
they able to open a bank account under
the Booster name or must that still
be done through the school?
Diane
K.
Rio del Norte PTA President
Dear
Diane,
Congratulations on the decision to
start a booster club. This is a wise
move and one that will help the extra-curricular
programs at your school.
Booster
clubs should consider one of two different
structures. Become a registered non-profit
corporation in your state, then down
the road when you have organized and
are prepared file with the IRS to
become a tax exempt organization.
The second option is to become a Public
Operating Foundation (POF). In the
first scenario where you become a
registered non-profit corporation
you will be issued your own Federal
Employer Identification Number (EIN)
which will enable you to open a local
bank account. If you choose the option
of a POF you will not be allowed to
open a local bank account, but instead
a sub-account will be established
by the master foundation to manage
your funds. Under the POF funds must
be sent to the master foundation for
deposit and distribution.
Opening
a bank account under the school is
a no-no. Although many booster clubs
have established bank accounts under
their school, the reality is that
unless your booster club has become
a subsidiary or "doing business as"
(dba) organization of the school your
club and the school could be in for
some troubling suprises from the local,
state and federal authorities.
Send
us your Dear Booster.... article and
we will select one each month to share
with the readers of Booster Trends.
To submit your email send to: dearbooster@boosterclubs.org.

| VIRTUAL
DRIVE |
|
|
Try
telling your fifteen year old student to
go door to door and sell candy bars, shampoo,
or even pies for your next fundraiser. You
already know what the reaction will be.
These students want to reap the benefits
of a fundraising activity, but they don’t
necessarily want to work hard to make the
money. Enter Virtual Drive of Texas, a state
approved computer based training Driver
Education program.
We
know how difficult it can be to get our
students motivated. The fundraising product
should have appeal to the people who sell
it. With most fundraising efforts, the difficult
part of the process is talking the customer
into buying something they really don’t
need. The key to Virtual Drive of Texas
is that the product sells itself because
it has a very specific market. Every 15
year old student in Texas is required to
take a driver education program. They will
spend in the neighborhood of $200 to $350
at some point to take a course. Our job
and yours is to make sure they choose this
one.
The
secret to our program is that we do all
the work. You don’t worry about inventory,
about collection of money, about sending
items back that don’t sell. The only thing
you will be responsible for is the advertising
campaign. After that, the work is done behind
the scenes and you get a check to your organization
every quarter. It truly is the easiest fundraising
program you will ever be a part of.
To
become an affiliate of our company and begin
making money, go to www.virtualdriveoftexas.com
and click on the fundraising tab. You will
learn more about our program and find out
just how easy it will be to earn money for
your organization.
